SKI WITH A VIEW OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
|
|
15-20 minute's drive from Le
Foulon is a great little ski resort with
26kms of piste, lots of off-piste tree skiing and a simply breathtaking view
of the Mediterranean from the top. Weekends, especially during the French half term, can get very crowded, but during the week there
is hardly anyone there - it's like having your own private ski resort. You soon get to know the lift operators, the sun shines on you all day and a great lunch can be had for under €15. |
|
Opened in 1963 a major draw is the stunning 360 degree
panorama. Not only do you get a fabulous view of the
Hautes Alpes to the north, Italy to the East and the Mediterranean
to the south, but on a haze free day you can even spy
Corsica glinting on the horizon. It's pretty special. |

It is unpretentious, good value
and the scenery is spectacular. With great nursery slopes but consisting mainly of intermediate piste it nonetheless has two very serious black runs that will test your skills to the limit. Does this all sound too good
to be true? Well the down side is a short season (Jan-March). February is by far the best bet for good snow and all season long they have modern snow cannons keeping the nursery slopes and one main run down in good condition. So it's a great place to learn and perfect for the kids. The ski school is friendly
and offers some English
speaking
tuition. |

What a ski break at Le Foulon and Gréolières les Neiges uniquely offers though is all the other reasons to holiday here in the Winter. So if you're not a 100 percent committed skier, or perhaps your partner only comes along for the sunshine and a good lunch, then the villages of Provence, the proximity of the Cote d'Azur and the cultural wealth of this corner of Provence is far more stimulating than a simple ski resort. |

MORE SKIING WITH A VIEW OF THE MEDITERRANEAN!
|
|
Twenty-five minute's scenic drive
from Le Foulon is another ski-resort. It's even further south
than Gréolières Les Neiges, and as such is the most southerly
resort in all the Alps.
It's also another star, and the view from the top looks straight down to the bay of Cannes.
It's not only unheard of among British skiers, but by a lot
of the locals down on the coast too! The same rules apply - holiday weekends are crammed, all other times it's quiet as you like. |
|
There's only one old two man chair, with the rest of the mountain served by pomma lifts. The piste is mainly wide and open - a great place to practise technique, marvel at the view and contemplate a lunch at Christianas. This log-cabin restaurant at the foot of the slopes does a 3 course menu that will either finish you off for the day or make you determined to burn off all the calories in the afternoon. |
